圣诞节的由来
圣诞节（Christmas）又称耶诞节、耶稣诞辰，译名为“基督弥撒”，是西方传统节日，起源于基督教，在每年12月25日。圣诞节是一个宗教节，因为把它当作耶稣的诞辰来庆祝，故名“耶诞节” 。

其实 Christmas 是由两个部分构成的：Christ 和 mas 。Christ指“基督”，而 mas源自于Mass，即“弥撒” 。所以“圣诞节（Christmas）就是“基督弥撒”的意思，以纪念耶稣的降生。

很多西方有信仰的人会在圣诞前夕“做礼拜，“做礼拜”在英语中没有特定的词，一般就是 go to church，或 to worship 。

圣诞老人原名是什么？
全球最知名的圣诞人物恐怕就是圣诞老人了，他老人家带礼物、穿红衫，广受小盆友欢迎。关于圣诞老人的说法，有两种：英国人的说法为 Christmas Father，美国人的说法为 Santa Claus 。

英国人的说法我们很好理解，那么美国人的 Santa Claus是怎么来的？其实，圣诞老人的形象来自于一位欧洲的主教，叫“St. Nicholas”--圣·尼古拉斯（这里 St.的全称为 Saint，就是信奉基督的“圣徒”之意）。
相传他一生做了很多慈善的工作，他非常关心孩子，慷慨大方、乐施礼物, 后成为圣诞老人的原型。

“圣诞快乐”，关于这句祝福，小编儿时就存在一个疑问，那就是——为什么“圣诞快乐”要用 Merry Christmas，而不是 Happy Christmas 呢？
merry 这个词在英文中的含义一直是 pleasant（愉悦的），但1843年狄更斯的《圣诞颂歌》（A Christmas Carol），让merry具备了“（因喝酒而）微醉”的意思。比如英文中就有名言：Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die. 这句话的含义是“吃吧、喝吧、放纵吧，明天我们都会死”，实际上就是“人生苦短、及时行乐” 。
因 Merry Christmas 这样的说法带有“放纵”的含义，所以有些人还是坚持用 Happy Christmas 。比如哈利波特系列电影的第三集，赫敏就对哈利说 Happy Christmas 。
在英国、爱尔兰地区，Happy Christmas 和 Merry Christmas 都有人用，而美国人都会用 Merry Christmas，使这样的表达更为常见。
